Tiger Brands highlights national nutrition programme to help ease student tertiary learning journey

Johannesburg. 15 February 2023. As thousands of young South Africans begin their higher education journey at tertiary institutions across the country this month, for some of them, the lack of access to good nutrition, can make what should be an exciting new chapter in their lives a daunting prospect.

Tiger Brands is bringing awareness to first year students in need, of its national nutrition programme, Plates4Days, which provides more than 5000 higher learning beneficiaries with monthly packages containing healthy and nutritious foods.

“As we wish our young students a successful 2023 academic year, we know that hunger is a daily reality faced by thousands of tertiary students and this can have devastating effects on academic outcomes. Access to healthy and nutritious meals makes it more likely that these students progress in their study programmes.”

“Plates4Days was designed to ease the burden on students who don’t have access to nutritious food so that they can focus on realising their dreams for a better future,” says Lulu Khumalo, External Affairs Director at Tiger Brands.

Food security is a critical challenge amongst vulnerable university students. An empty stomach can be debilitating for young minds who need regular and sufficient sustenance to feed their concentration and their need to retain information.

Tiger Brands’ Plates4Days is one of the country’s leading university food and nutrition programme initiated in 2008. It supports more than 5300 students at 7 universities each month.
